My name is Edward L. Genereux, and I am running for city council in Independence. In 1990, my father ran for the Minnesota Senate. He lost in the primary, but his lifelong commitment to service is what inspired me to run for office myself, 36 years later. Dad passed away in 2015, but I still hope to make him proud by serving our community the way he always believed in serving his. With rising costs squeezing families at every income level and artificial intelligence reshaping local jobs and city systems alike, it seemed like the right year to run. As an information technology specialist, I will bring a tech-savvy skillset to our city council that's sorely needed during these rapidly changing times.
Priorities1) Affordability - Rising costs are squeezing families at every income level. As a council member, I will look for every opportunity to keep city spending lean and prevent unnecessary costs from being passed on to residents.2) Taxes - I have made a strict no new taxes pledge that will last for the duration of my term. I will vote no on any property tax increase.3) Responsible Development - Independence is a rural community, but it is also a growing one. I view Independence as a bedroom community, and I will support slow, responsible housing development that respects our rural character. Growing our tax base the right way is how we keep taxes low without cutting the services residents rely on.4) Technology - Data centers and flock cameras have no place in our community. I will vote no on any proposed data center and fight back against mass surveillance in all its forms.5) Public Safety - In a fire or medical emergency, fast response is a matter of life and death. I will ensure our first responders have the support they need to act quickly.6) Local Issues - In addition to these broader priorities, I will work hard to ensure hyper-local issues are addressed in a timely and fiscally responsible manner.
